Description

Moldova may not be thought of as a hotbed of wine production, but the country has a wine heritage that dates back thousands of years. Chateau Purcari was founded in 1827, and even Queen Victoria has enjoyed the wines from this amazing property. This selection is a real eye-opener and will make you think again about Moldova.

The wines we sell don’t come off a never-ending production line, so there is always a tiny chance that one of the wines in the curated cases drops out of stock. If this happens, we will replace the missing wine with one of similar style and always a higher value; we don’t want you to lose out here.

What's inside?

1827 Chardonnay

A wonderful homage to the great white wines of Burgundy. Structure, balance  and wonderful weight of fruit. This is a superb wine, so immediately engaging but far from simple. Salmon and this wine is a match made in heaven.

1827 Rose di Purcari

Paler in colour and made using Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Rara Neagra which are hand harvested and hand selected. Flavours of red berries and stone fruit with a gentle creaminess to the edges of the palate and racy acidity.

1827 Pinot Noir

This is the wine that got me to notice this property, great Pinot Noir is always tricky to master and Purcari manage it year in year out. Perfumed wild hedgerow fruits with a lovely earthy undercurrent and pitch perfect acidity. I love this wine with lamb, it’s a perfect match.

‘Nocturne’ Rara Neagra

The fruit for this wine is harvested at night to protect it from the sun and this traps in as much flavour as possible. It’s hard work but it’s worth it and the proof is in this rich, deep wine. Gorgeous sour cherry notes mingle with ripe blackcurrant and blueberry with wafts of smokiness and a fabulous depth.

Saperavi di Purcari, Limited Edition

Saperavi is more commonly associated with Georgia but it works well in Moldova too. This limited edition wine has won a whole stack of medals a they are all richly deserved. Wonderful rich plum fruit with a lovely upfront fruitiness yet a fabulous underlying elegance.

Freedom Blend

This wine is a tribute to Moldova and its two neighbours, Georgia and Ukraine, each of which has had part of their land annexed by Russia, of course for Ukraine it’s a little more than that now. As such the label bears the colours of Ukraine and the doves of peace. A blend of the three principal varieties from each country, Saperavi from Georgia, Rara Neagra from Moldova and Bastardo from Ukraine it is brooding, powerful, smoky and utterly fantastic. Let us hope that one day there is a blend to celebrate freedom from tyranny,

These six stupendous Chateau Purcari Wines for only £105 – you save £26
