Description
One of the superstars of the Veneto, Giacomo Montresor, founded this estate in 1892, and the wines have steadily built a global reputation. They are classics that display just what it is that makes this region so special, but the wines also manage to offer exceptional value.
–
The wines we sell don’t come off a never-ending production line, so there is always a tiny chance that one of the wines in the curated cases drops out of stock. If this happens, we will replace the missing wine with one of similar style and always a higher value; we don’t want you to lose out here.
What's inside?
‘Gran Guardia’ Soave Classico
Beautiful Soave, a wine style which was once a 1980s restaurant wine list workhorse, is now showing that it is genuinely world-class. Fleshy, ripe and bright with a fabulous balance between freshness and texture. It’s one of my favourite white wines full stop.
‘Campo Valentino’ Lugana
This region has become a little trendy recently, and prices have shot up, but justifiably so. Produced using 100% Turbiano, a relatively unheralded variety which produces a subtle and restrained white with delicate stone fruit and lightly nutty aromas. The palate is textural with more nutty characters and good concentration, all beautifully balanced by peachy fruit, a dash of lime, and taut acidity on the finish.
Organic Corvina
Corvina is the principal variety in the wines of Valpolicella, and here it is given sole billing. Top-notch organic fruit helps to produce a wine which is filled with crunchy black cherry fruit, poised acidity and a lighter yet complex palate. Serve a little cooler to maximise the wow factor.
Urban Park Appasimento
A bonkers name and a bonkers label. ‘Urban Park’ was a cultural festival held at the Montresor winery, and for the event, a giant graffiti mural was created on one wall. That mural has been digitally rendered to this wine’s label, in 3D! The appassimento method is a partial drying of the grapes which intensifies the fruit character. This is a rich, bold, upfront and very fruity wine that is every bit as much fun as its label.
‘Capitel della Crosara’ Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore
The Ripasso method sees the regular Valpolicella wine ‘re-passed’ over skins from the Amarone method of wine making. This adds a real richness and depth to the original wine, and this is a perfect example. Meatier than a straight Valpolicella but not quite as OTT as an Amarone, it’s a real treat and works perfectly with roast beef and Yorkshire puddings.
‘Satinato’ Amarone della Valpolicella
Satinato refers to the frosted finish to the bottle. Originally conceived to protect the wine in the bottle from the harmful effects of sunlight, as the wines were shipped across the ocean to America. Now it is a tribute to the rich history of the Montresor family, Sweet, bitter, rich, deep, brooding, complex and everything a classic Amarone should be, just with a more elegant palate than some of the modern blockbuster wines. Serve it with Parmesan shavings.
