Description
The easiest title for this case is ‘It’s not just bloody Rioja!’ Whilst Rioja is a wine region we all know and does produce some incredible wines, there are also so many other terrific regions which go a little under the radar sometimes. So, this case gives you a terrific introduction to every aspect of Spanish wine.
–
The wines we sell don’t come off a never-ending production line, so there is always a tiny chance that one of the wines in the curated cases drops out of stock. If this happens, we will replace the missing wine with one of similar style and always a higher value; we don’t want you to lose out here.
What's inside?
Diez Siglos Verdejo, Rueda
Rueda was the region that really showed drinkers from outside Spain that this wasn’t a country that only made red wine. The region lies at a slightly higher altitude, and this helps the fruit to retain its freshness. This Verdejo is a fleshy, fresh riot of delightful stone fruit flavours all wrapped up in a ribbon of perfectly poised acidity.
Vanidade Albarino, Rias Baixas
Albarino has really caught on in the last few years as it provides a welcome alternative to wines such as Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. From the North West of Spain, the vineyards lie along the coast, and the wines really have that sea breeze freshness to them. This wine has that magic combination of zippy freshness and texture to the palate so that the acidity never dominates. A glass of this on a sunny day and you are instantly transported to a lazy sunny afternoon watching the boats coming into harbour.
Juan Gil ‘Yellow Label’ Monastrel, Jumilla
Right down in the sunny, sunny south of Spain lies the Jumilla region, and Juan Gil is leading the charge in proving that world-class wines can be produced here. The thick-skinned Monastrell grape is perfect for lending some protection against the sun’s rays. All of that sunshine burns out the aggression in the skins and helps to create a wine which is soft, warming, welcoming and deep. Bags of rustic charm and just the sort of red wine you want to go with a rich chorizo dish.
Cap de Pera Montsant
Montsant is surrounded by the far more famous (and expensive) Priorat, but it shares a lot of the same traits stylistically. Predominantly Carinena with a little Grenache and Syrah backing things up. No oak, just this lovely dark, brooding, deep richness of fruit with a delightfully and very more-ish freshness to it.
Bodegas Ontanon Reserva, Rioja Oriental
Time, that’s what this wine is all about, lots of time. It’s spent a couple of years in a barrel and a lot more time resting in the bottle, and the result is a wine that is so well worn in and an absolutely textbook example of what a Reserva Rioja should be all about. Soft, supple, spicy, stewed fruit with wafts of toasty, creamy oak and a finish which seems positively endless.
Gomez Cruzado ‘Predilicto’, Rioja Alta
Gomez Cruzado put a thoroughly modern twist on very traditional winemaking. With this beautiful wine, the focus is purely on the fruit, so there is no oak ageing at all. What you get is a bright, approachable, and incredibly complex still. Fabulous wine.
