Hello, I’m Rob Hoult and here is our Try Something Different Wine Case
A selection of wines from countries that may not be as familiar to many drinkers, despite the fact that they have centuries or millennia of wine-making history behind them. Proof that there is a whole world of wine to discover.
–
The wines we sell don’t come off a never-ending production line, so there is always a tiny chance that one of the wines in the curated cases drops out of stock. If this happens, we will replace the missing wine with one of similar style and always a higher value; we don’t want you to lose out here.
What's inside?
Its time to try something different…
Chateau Mercian Koshu Gris de Gris, Japan
Japan is one of the younger wine-producing nations and produces very little wine. Chateau Mercian is one of its leading producers, and whilst it makes Chardonnay and Syrah, it is the native Koshu grape that provides the most interest. The grapes are an incredibly vibrant pink in colour and, due to the humid climate, are trellised to grow so that they hang down from overhead. When the sun is at its brightest, the grapes are protected by little paper hats. This incredible attention to detail runs through everything that Mercian do. The wine is subtle and elegant with the use of a little skin contact to add in some extra layers of flavour. This lends a beautiful balance between bitterness and richness in what is a very subtle wine.
Zahel Gemischter Satz, Austria
Vienna is the only capital city with a wine region within its limits, and the classic Viennese wine is ‘Gemischter Satz’. This is the classic ‘field blend’ whereby a single vineyard is planted with a number of different varieties which are all co-harvested and co-fermented. Normally, a separate wine would be made from each variety and then the resulting wines blended, so this way leaves things firmly in the lap of the Gods. Alex Zahel is a winemaking genius, though, and his wines are fabulously complex, delightfully playful and filled with flavour. Like the butterfly on the label, once they unfurl their wings, they truly brighten up.
Lyrarakis ‘Queen’ Vidiano White, Greece
Greece may well have been making wine for thousands of years, but it is only in the last few decades that it has got back to competing with the rest of the world. Lyrarakis on the island of Crete are one of the new guard leading the way for modern Greek winemaking. Using only traditional varieties such as Vidiano, they are truly making a name for themselves on the global wine stage. Pale golden in colour with stone fruit and citrus notes, the wine encapsulates a hot day high in the mountains.
Cortese ‘Nostru’ Frappato, Sicily
Frappato is a delightfully summery wine, one that you could, even should, wang in the fridge and really let its freshness be the star. Floral, perfumed, loads of red fruit and a fabulously juicy finish. If the sun is shining and you’re outside enjoying cous-cous salad, cold cuts and cheese, and you’re not drinking Frappato, then is it even summer?
Chateau Purcari ‘Nocturne’ Rara Negra, Moldova
This Chateau has been around since 1827 and at one point could even claim Queen Victoria as a customer. Those years of experience are evident in this ode to the classic wines of Moldova. The fruit is hand-harvested at night so as to preserve freshness. It’s deep, rich and with plenty of bold red fruits and an engaging smokiness. I’d like to go and visit them, but they are a little too close to the Ukrainian border for my liking at the moment.
Domaine des Tourelles Vielles Vignes Carignan, Lebanon
There was a time when Lebanese wines were very much a novelty, but the rise of Chateau Musar and Lebanese cuisine has meant that they occupy a place the wines richly deserve. Winemaker Faussi Issa is a genuinely lovely man, and this is evident in his wines, which are so finely and carefully crafted. Using old vines and the delicious Carignan grape, he has been able to create a wine which is soft, warming, spicy and juicy.
