Description
This handpicked South African case of wines showcases the country’s extraordinary winemaking depth, blending Old World elegance with New World energy. From the textured brilliance of KWV’s The Mentors Chenin Blanc in Swartland—one of the most exciting expressions of the grape today—to the Loire-inspired freshness of Waterkloof’s Circumstance Sauvignon Blanc, these whites are all about precision and character.
–
The wines we sell don’t come off a never-ending production line, so there is always a tiny chance that one of the wines in the curated cases drops out of stock. If this happens, we will replace the missing wine with one of similar style and always a higher value; we don’t want you to lose out here.
What's inside?
KWV ‘The mentors’ Chenin Blanc, Swartland
Whilst Vouvray may be the spiritual home of Chenin Blanc, South Africa is arguably producing some of the most interesting white wines in the world from it right now. This is a prime example; there is such a wonderful texture to this wine that immediately gets you engaged, and then there follow so many layers of flavour that you have to sit up and pay attention. It’s a truly stunning wine.
Waterkloof ‘Circumstance’ Sauvignon Blanc, Stellenbosch
This may be a new world Sauvignon, but it doffs its cap firmly in the direction of the Loire Valley. So don’t expect lashings of lychees, instead there is a delicious grassy freshness with beautiful mineral complexity and perfectly aligned acidity. The balance of this wine is amazing and match it up to a little goat’s cheese and you’re away.
Botanica Estates ‘Flowergirl’ Albarino, Stellenbosch
Ginny Povall is a brilliant winemaker; she also owns a lovely guest house and a Proteas farm (she grows lots of native South African flowers), hence the name of this wine. Ginny hails from the States but fell in love with The Cape and decided to settle there and make amazing wines. This Albarino is just such a wine, piercingly fresh and with a palate which is positively invigorating. There’s a lovely balance between fresh fruit character, an underlying textural element and a summery salinity. Drink with prawns and avocado.
Zorgvliet ‘Silvermyn’ Red, Stellenbosch
Zorgvliet is the coolest winery I’ve ever visited, and it’s no surprise that every wine that comes out of there is brilliant. This is the entry level, but the wine punches way, way above that weight. A classic Cape ‘Bordeaux blend’ dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon it has fabulous structure and a brilliant weight of rich, ripe blackcurrant fruit.
Waterkloof ‘Seriously Cool’ Cinsault, Stellenbosch
On the back label, it says “Drink me cool, but take me seriously,” and that’s exactly what you should do. On a hot and sunny day, serve this straight from the fridge, and all of the bright, juicy, crunchy red fruit charms will make a perfect partner to a charcuterie board whilst you relax in the garden. Drink it just a little chilled with something Mediterranean if the weather is a little cooler.
The Liberator ‘Opposites Attract’ Episode 32, Constantia
The Merlot is grown near the sea, and the Syrah from much further inland. These two star-crossed lovers would never normally come together, but here they do, to dazzling effect. And because The Liberator is a cheeky man, he’s thrown in a third wheel, by way of a little Cabernet Franc. The result is an incredible wine, tasting like classic Claret and a beefy Aussie red mixed and shaken together in South Africa.
