Salasar ‘Carte Azur’ Cremant de Limoux, France
We start at the beginning, as Limoux is where sparkling wine production began, even Dom Perignon visited the region and discovered the method before using it up in Champagne. This wine is made using the same grape varieties as Champagne and the same method; the primary difference is sunshine. It’s much sunnier down in the south of France, and that little extra ripeness in the grapes just adds a little extra weight and approachability to this wine. It’s a superstar.
Francois et Julien Pinon Vouvray Petillant, France
These two brothers are rightly regarded as superstars in this region. Chenin is the grape here, and there is no better place on earth to grow it. Three years on its lees provides complexity, but the wine still retains the classic richness of the variety, with the bubbles cutting through with purity and precision. A fabulous aperitif.
Ferghettina Franciacorta Brut, Italy
Franciacorta is the serious side of Italian sparkling wine; this is definitely not Prosecco. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with rules on yield and minimum ageing times, which are stricter than Champagne, this is a remarkably serious wine. Ferghettina are a family-owned winery with an attention to detail that I have rarely seen equalled. The resulting wines showcase that they aren’t just making some of the best wines in Franciacorta, but some of the best wines on the planet.
London Cru Brut Rose, England
This was London’s first ‘urban winery’ and it is still blazing a trail today. A delightfully delicate rose with a beautiful shade of pink and a palate which combines yeasty, toasty notes with youthful wild strawberry and redcurrant notes. It’s not often you could go and visit a winery by tube.
De Bortoli ‘Emeri’ Moscato Rose, Australia
Fun, that’s what this wine is all about, fun. This is a classic Aussie style with lower alcohol and a whole heap of fruit. It is a little sweeter but in a really, really classy way. The ideal lunchtime drink, out in the garden with a charcuterie platter.
Chocolate Box Sparkling Shiraz, Australia
Sparkling red is a thing, it’s just not a thing you see very often. The French do it, but the wines tend to be a little sharper than this rich Aussie classic. It can mess with the brain a little as the eyes see a red wine, but they also see bubbles, the nose detects blackcurrant richness, but also an underlying freshness. The palate is then truly bamboozled by the chilled nature of the wine, but the obvious ode to blackcurrant lushness that is Shiraz. Don’t worry, though, a couple of sips and all your senses come into line, and
then the only problem you have is trying to put your glass down. Decadent and delicious.
