SUMMARY:Greek Tasting with Effie Kallinikidou from Lyrarakis Estate - 7th February 2025
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome Effie Kallinikidou to our lovely shop for what will be an amazing evening tasting some of the most incredible Greek wines available. Read on to discover a little more about Effie and the Lryarakis estate. \nThe Lyrarakis estate is a family vineyard and winery which has been producing high quality wines since 1966. Lyrarakis has devoted itself to the revival of indigenous\, almost extinct\, rare varieties such as Dafni\, Plyto\, Melissaki and others\, vinifying wines that highlight their unique and distinctive character. Lyrarakis is located in the mountainous commune of Alagni (440 metres above sea-level)\, south of the city of Heraklion\, in Crete. The soils are predominantly loam with either more sand or clay depending on the vineyard site. The well-preserved 14th century stone-presses in the fields around the winery is proof of the area’s long history of grape-growing and winemaking. In charge of winemaking is Myriam Ambuzer\, who has been vital in securing Lyrarakis a place in the elite wineries of Greece. Her philosophy emphasises precision\, purity and supple texture of the fruit. She argues it is all about expressing authenticity\, achieving harmony and that every variety needs to be worked in its own special way. \nEffie Kallinikidou has an Oenology degree from the department of Oenology and Technology of Beverages Institute in Athens\, while she attended a research wine program at Forschungsanstalt Geisenheim\, Fachgebiet Mikrobiologie und Biochemie in Germany which resulted in a publication at the Scientific Magazin Die Wein – Wissenchaft\, Viticultural and Enological Sciences. \nShe has participated in tasting panels for Food and Beverage Magazines and written several articles for wine at Food and Beverages Magazines in Greece\, she has worked as tutor to restaurant staff conducting wine seminars and to consumers at Wine Clubs in Athens\, while she was the Chief Oenologist in wineries at Cephalonia\, Peloponnese\, and Santorini in the beginning of her career. She has been engaged in the promotion of Greek wines in Export Markets since 2000 and currently is the Exports Manager at Lyrarakis Winery since 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Franciacorta is home to Italy’s very best sparkling wines and sparkling wines that are a far cry from the somewhat ubiquitous Prosecco which dominates these days. Ferghettina are a family firm with quality and innovation at the centre of their philosophy. Not only do they produce some of our favourite sparkling wines from anywhere on Earth but they are also incredibly lovely people. \nBridget has been lucky enough to visit this fabulous property and now she has persuaded the utterly wonderful Laura from Ferghettina to visit sunny Huddersfield. As such on Wednesday February 26th Laura will be guiding us through the whole spectrum of Franciacorta and introducing you to some truly stunning wines. This is going to be a truly spectacular tasting and a definite treat for the taste-buds.

DESCRIPTION:I often hear the refrain “Well I wouldn’t know the difference between expensive wine and everyday wine.” I’ve never believed this to be true\, I think we all have an inbuilt ability to see quality but I thought maybe it merited a vinous experiment. So this tasting will be a simple comparison between two wines in the same style but at very different price points. The trick to ensuring that this actually feels somewhat scientific is that it will be a blind tasting. \n5 pairs of wines\, each pair tasted side by side with a little background info on both from me but no indication as to which is the pricey one and which is the midweek value*. Ten terrific wines\, one superb evening. \n*My idea of midweek value wines is pretty decent gear at a sensible price and not a bottle of 19 Crimes\, as such it’s going to be all about flavour.

SUMMARY:Brotte Wine Tasting with Greig Wilson from North South Wines\, 27th March 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Southern Rhone is home to some of the greatest wines in the world and the most famous of those is Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The Brotte family have been based in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since 1931 and the family estate\, Domaine Barville\, is here.  \nGrenache is the king in the Southern Rhone and here it expresses all of its soft\, supple charms. What really makes the wines from Brotte standout is freshness. There is an incredible purity to these wines which you don’t normally see in the wines of the Rhone. You will get to truly discover this over a selection of both red and white wines\, another underrated feature of the Southern Rhone. \nSince 2014\, their wines carry the TERRA VITIS French environmental label. This is a sustainable agriculture practice certification which ensures respecting nature from the vine to the glass\, as well as within the company. The wines are\, after all\, crafted with nature. \nGreig is a fabulously knowledgeable and really rather lovely chap and the wines are truly spectacular\, it’s going to be a terrific evening.

They are foremost a family business and a business of families.  \nTheir Tupuna (Ancestors)\, were kaitiaki of whenua and moana – farmers\, fishermen\, planters and providores. They were astute\, creative and entrepreneurial. It is their responsibility to uphold their legacy\, and enhance the resources they passed down to them\, now and for future generations.\nThey have created internationally recognised award-winning wines while remaining true to their deeply held values\, which include rangatiratanga\, kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga – excellence\, guardianship and kindness. \nEvery Tohu bottles carries their distinctive logo\, derived from a koru pattern. For Māori\, the koru symbolises growth\, life and the natural world\, and the logo celebrates this iconic spiral. It represents the growth of the company and the journey of their people from the past to today. This koru signifies the long-term intergenerational goals and has become their tohu\, their signature.  \nThis commitment to heritage\, family and the land is evident in the incredible wines they produce\, wines we’ll get the opportunity to taste.

DESCRIPTION:Sakura season is the Japanese celebration during April and May and it provides us with the perfect opportunity to show you the amazing Akashi-Tai range and pair it with some cheese – yes we did say cheese!! \nWe’re going to take a deep dive in to top quality Sake from the traditional styles through to sparkling sake and even some fruit infused sake\, an absolute delight. There may even be a cocktail! \nWe will be pairing each of these Nihonshu (correct term for ‘Japanese Sake’ and official term used in Japan) with a carefully curated selection of top quality cheese.

Bodegas Ontanon produce amazing Rioja wines and some terrific wines in Ribera del Duero too. DESCRIPTION:As the first tasting sold out so quickly we decided to do it again\, but with different wines! \nI often hear the refrain “Well I wouldn’t know the difference between expensive wine and everyday wine.” I’ve never believed this to be true\, I think we all have an inbuilt ability to see quality but I thought maybe it merited a vinous experiment. So this tasting will be a simple comparison between two wines in the same style but at very different price points. The trick to ensuring that this actually feels somewhat scientific is that it will be a blind tasting. \n5 pairs of wines\, each pair tasted side by side with a little background info on both from me but no indication as to which is the pricey one and which is the midweek value*. Ten terrific wines\, one superb evening. \n*My idea of midweek value wines is pretty decent gear at a sensible price and not a bottle of 19 Crimes\, as such it’s going to be all about flavour.
