SUMMARY:Sicilian wine tasting with Santa Tresa and Cortese Wineries - Thursday 30th April 2026
DESCRIPTION:Siblings Stefano and Marina Girelli hail from the very north of Italy but they could both see the potential that existed in the wilds of the island of Sicily. In 2001 they purchased the Santa Tresa winery\, lured by its rich red soils and back to nature wilderness. In 2016 they then purchased Azienda Agricole Cortese based in the hinterland of Ragusa. We have both been fortunate enough to visit these two fabulous wineries and have been passionate champions of the incredible wines that they both produce.  \nNow you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the ethos that is integral to both properties. Organic\, sustainable and crafted with a respect for the land\, the flora and the fauna. We’ll be joined by their export manager\, the wonderful Val\, who will guide us through the very essence of Sicilian wine.

DESCRIPTION:Our most popular tastings of 2025\, so we had to bring them back! And\, yes\, they are always different wines from previous Spot the Difference tastings so you can come to as many as you like! \nI often hear the refrain “Well I wouldn’t know the difference between expensive wine and everyday wine.” I’ve never believed this to be true\, I think we all have an inbuilt ability to see quality but I thought maybe it merited a vinous experiment. So this tasting will be a simple comparison between two wines in the same style but at very different price points. The trick to ensuring that this actually feels somewhat scientific is that it will be a blind tasting. \n5 pairs of wines\, each pair tasted side by side with a little background info on both from me but no indication as to which is the pricey one and which is the midweek value*. Ten terrific wines\, one superb evening. \n*My idea of midweek value wines is pretty decent gear at a sensible price and not a bottle of 19 Crimes\, as such it’s going to be all about flavour.

DESCRIPTION:Bodega El Escocés Volante is a family-owned and run business based in Calatayud\, Aragon in the North East of Spain. They are passionate about producing high quality wines with\na particular focus on the native Garnacha variety.\nThe founder\, Norrel Robertson\, has worked in wine for over three decades\, becoming a Master of Wine in 2000. In 2003 he gained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology from Lincoln University\, New Zealand. He has worked vintages in numerous countries\, both northern and southern hemispheres\, and continues to work as a consultant nationally and overseas. In 2020\, he was inducted into the Gran Orden de Caballeros del Vino.

DESCRIPTION:Quinta do Cardo is a historic wine estate in Portugal’s Beira Interior\, set on a 750-metre plateau near the Douro International Reserve and Castelo Rodrigo. \nFounded in 1932\, it comprises 79 hectares of certified organic vineyards on sunlit slopes by the Serra da Marofa\, planted with a diverse range of native grape varieties. The estate is surrounded by cork oaks\, wild forest\, and natural clay ponds that store rainwater\, supporting a balanced\, self-sustaining ecosystem. \nA pioneer in Portuguese organic viticulture\, Quinta do Cardo began its transition in 2009 and strengthened it in 2021\, preserving biodiversity and reinforcing its reputation as one of the region’s most distinctive and environmentally conscious wine producers. \nCome and spend an evening with Tiago\, the brand ambassador for Quinta do Cardo\, as we try some of there amazing wines.

The Pisano family share an Italian and Basque heritage and this family-run estate traces its roots back to 1914\, when Italian immigrant\, Don Césare Secundino Pisano\, moved to Progreso and planted vineyards there. Today\, the fourth generation of Pisano’s\, brothers Daniel\, Eduardo\, and Gustavo\, keep tradition alive.First and foremost\, Pisano is a family winery and each brother brings his own passion: Eduardo manages vineyard care with artisanal precision; Gustavo oversees the cellar and blending; and Daniel\, the family’s charismatic spokesperson\, drives exports to far‑flung places\, even to Antarctica\, bringing Uruguay into the global wine conversation.The Pisano family are fiercely proud of Tannat\, Uruguay’s flagship grape. DESCRIPTION:As we come towards winter and the dark nights draw in my drinking thoughts turn towards the delights of Port. This is a little unfair though because Port is fabulous at any time of year and there is so much diversity that there is a Port for everyone and every occasion.  \nI’ve been to Porto twice in the last year and it’s a fabulous place where Port wines are the very beating heart of all that goes on. So from dry white Port through to bold Vintage Port via epic Tawny ports it’s a whole lot of flavour and we’re going to cram it all in to one amazing evening.

DESCRIPTION:Over the past 30 years\, Richard has become one of the most respected authorities on South African wine in the UK and beyond. Between 1995 and 2002\, he lived and worked in the Cape\, witnessing the renaissance of the post-apartheid wine industry. Throughout this fruitful period\, he established a healthy rapport with the great and the good of the local wine scene\, affording him access to their distinguished cellars. \nHere are a few words from our plucky protagonist\, Rick\, The Liberator. \nSome say that The Liberator conjures up images of a disguised\, cloaked superhero\, charging around the Winelands rescuing bottles in distress. But I’m no Superman. I’m just plain Rick; a Cape crusader perhaps\, but one where cloaks are exchanged for a rather tatty Harris Tweed jacket and any superhuman powers are substituted by a supposedly blessed palate. \nOn his regular jaunts around the Cape\, he is often confounded by the number of great wines that are resigned to a tragic fate of being blended away or disposed of in bulk. It might be an occasional experimental batch\, or possibly an interesting off-cut from some proud winemaker’s latest premium release. Whatever their provenance\, it’s his mission as The Liberator to procure these precious vinous orphans and consign them to a better home. \nInevitably\, each wine discovered by The Liberator comes with its own story; a tale of its untimely existence. You’ll find that every release has its testimony recounted\, in bottle and on screen\, as a unique and evocative Episode. Each Episode is a one off and production is limited.

DESCRIPTION:As the first tasting sold out so quickly we decided to do it again\, but with different wines! \nI often hear the refrain “Well I wouldn’t know the difference between expensive wine and everyday wine.” I’ve never believed this to be true\, I think we all have an inbuilt ability to see quality but I thought maybe it merited a vinous experiment. So this tasting will be a simple comparison between two wines in the same style but at very different price points. The trick to ensuring that this actually feels somewhat scientific is that it will be a blind tasting. \n5 pairs of wines\, each pair tasted side by side with a little background info on both from me but no indication as to which is the pricey one and which is the midweek value*. Ten terrific wines\, one superb evening. \n*My idea of midweek value wines is pretty decent gear at a sensible price and not a bottle of 19 Crimes\, as such it’s going to be all about flavour.
