DESCRIPTION:New Zealand\, a tasting where you can discover the diversity of this amazing country\, it’s not just bloody Sauvignon Blanc! Now\, that isn’t to say that there aren’t amazing Sauvignon Blancs available because that’s bleeding obvious but there is so much more to the land of the long white cloud than this one varietal. \nBridget has toured New Zealand twice (without me each time!!) and so join me for a tasting of wines from places I’ve not visited but with wines that I’ve drunk a lot of. A whole host of varieties from one of the nicest places on earth\, apparently (did I mention that I’d not been to NZ?) From North to South we will taste some truly world class wines. This will be a genuine eye-opener of a tasting.

DESCRIPTION:We last did a wonderful wine tasting with Conrado from Bodegas Ontanon back in September 2022\, so when we heard he would be available for another tasting we had to jump at the chance.\nConrado is a fantastically entertaining and superbly knowledgable gentleman and will guide us through a whole heap of amazing wines. Bodegas Ontanon produce amazing Rioja wines and some terrific wines in Ribera del Duero too. You really don’t want to miss the chance to taste some of the best Spanish wines around and listen to one of the most wonderful people in the world of wine.

Max is oenologist\, cellar master and chef de cave for Champagne Mandois and it’s a real coup to get him here in sunny Huddersfield. The wines from Champagne Mandois have become firm favourites over the two years since Bridge first brought them in and this will give us the opportunity to taste through the range with the man responsible for making them so ridiculously delicious. \nA Champagne tasting is a special event so we’re going to add in some lovely charcuterie to pair the wines with and we do also encourage you to dress up for the occasion\, black tie would look lovely\, but it’s not compulsory although I shall be dressed accordingly. \nSo get your tickets for the ultimate Champagne Tuesday.

DESCRIPTION:As the first tasting sold out so quickly we decided to do it again\, but with different wines! \nI often hear the refrain “Well I wouldn’t know the difference between expensive wine and everyday wine.” I’ve never believed this to be true\, I think we all have an inbuilt ability to see quality but I thought maybe it merited a vinous experiment. So this tasting will be a simple comparison between two wines in the same style but at very different price points. The trick to ensuring that this actually feels somewhat scientific is that it will be a blind tasting. \n5 pairs of wines\, each pair tasted side by side with a little background info on both from me but no indication as to which is the pricey one and which is the midweek value*. Ten terrific wines\, one superb evening. \n*My idea of midweek value wines is pretty decent gear at a sensible price and not a bottle of 19 Crimes\, as such it’s going to be all about flavour.

They were astute\, creative and entrepreneurial. It is their responsibility to uphold their legacy\, and enhance the resources they passed down to them\, now and for future generations.\nThey have created internationally recognised award-winning wines while remaining true to their deeply held values\, which include rangatiratanga\, kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga – excellence\, guardianship and kindness. \nEvery Tohu bottles carries their distinctive logo\, derived from a koru pattern. SUMMARY:Brotte Wine Tasting with Greig Wilson from North South Wines\, 27th March 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Southern Rhone is home to some of the greatest wines in the world and the most famous of those is Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The Brotte family have been based in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since 1931 and the family estate\, Domaine Barville\, is here.  \nGrenache is the king in the Southern Rhone and here it expresses all of its soft\, supple charms. What really makes the wines from Brotte standout is freshness. There is an incredible purity to these wines which you don’t normally see in the wines of the Rhone. You will get to truly discover this over a selection of both red and white wines\, another underrated feature of the Southern Rhone. \nSince 2014\, their wines carry the TERRA VITIS French environmental label. This is a sustainable agriculture practice certification which ensures respecting nature from the vine to the glass\, as well as within the company. The wines are\, after all\, crafted with nature. \nGreig is a fabulously knowledgeable and really rather lovely chap and the wines are truly spectacular\, it’s going to be a terrific evening.

SUMMARY:Greek Tasting with Effie Kallinikidou from Lyrarakis Estate - 7th February 2025
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome Effie Kallinikidou to our lovely shop for what will be an amazing evening tasting some of the most incredible Greek wines available. Read on to discover a little more about Effie and the Lryarakis estate. \nThe Lyrarakis estate is a family vineyard and winery which has been producing high quality wines since 1966. Lyrarakis has devoted itself to the revival of indigenous\, almost extinct\, rare varieties such as Dafni\, Plyto\, Melissaki and others\, vinifying wines that highlight their unique and distinctive character. Lyrarakis is located in the mountainous commune of Alagni (440 metres above sea-level)\, south of the city of Heraklion\, in Crete. The soils are predominantly loam with either more sand or clay depending on the vineyard site. The well-preserved 14th century stone-presses in the fields around the winery is proof of the area’s long history of grape-growing and winemaking. In charge of winemaking is Myriam Ambuzer\, who has been vital in securing Lyrarakis a place in the elite wineries of Greece. Her philosophy emphasises precision\, purity and supple texture of the fruit. She argues it is all about expressing authenticity\, achieving harmony and that every variety needs to be worked in its own special way. \nEffie Kallinikidou has an Oenology degree from the department of Oenology and Technology of Beverages Institute in Athens\, while she attended a research wine program at Forschungsanstalt Geisenheim\, Fachgebiet Mikrobiologie und Biochemie in Germany which resulted in a publication at the Scientific Magazin Die Wein – Wissenchaft\, Viticultural and Enological Sciences. \nShe has participated in tasting panels for Food and Beverage Magazines and written several articles for wine at Food and Beverages Magazines in Greece\, she has worked as tutor to restaurant staff conducting wine seminars and to consumers at Wine Clubs in Athens\, while she was the Chief Oenologist in wineries at Cephalonia\, Peloponnese\, and Santorini in the beginning of her career. She has been engaged in the promotion of Greek wines in Export Markets since 2000 and currently is the Exports Manager at Lyrarakis Winery since 2016.

From fizz to fortified with red\, white and rose in between\, it is a treat for the senses. You’ll be guided through five flights of four wines by Rob in a fashion that can only be described as ‘unique’. These evenings have become the highlight of our tasting calendar so grab your tickets whilst you can. \nThere are six nights to choose from and each tasting starts at the slightly earlier time of 6pm\, we do have quite a lot of wine to get through\, and finish at around 9pm. Tickets are £25 each. We won’t be providing any nibbles as table space is at a premium due to the volume of glassware needed but feel free to bring your own snacks/banquet.
