The De Bortoli family left Italy for a better life in Australia and the winery is still privately owned by the 3rd generation of the De Bortoli family.  \nThe wine making philosophy is simple\, great wine begins in the vineyard and should reflect the region where the grapes are grown. They believe wine should have varietal detail and be a reflection of site\, season and the people involved. Wine should have ‘a sense of place’. \nThe ever charming and incredibly knowledgeable Greig Wilson will guide us through a selection of quite simply superb wines which showcase Australia’s wine traditions and its joyful modernity.

SUMMARY:The Liberator Wine Tasting with Richard Kelley MW - 22nd October 2025
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 30 years\, Richard has become one of the most respected authorities on South African wine in the UK and beyond. Between 1995 and 2002\, he lived and worked in the Cape\, witnessing the renaissance of the post-apartheid wine industry. Throughout this fruitful period\, he established a healthy rapport with the great and the good of the local wine scene\, affording him access to their distinguished cellars. \nHere are a few words from our plucky protagonist\, Rick\, The Liberator. \nSome say that The Liberator conjures up images of a disguised\, cloaked superhero\, charging around the Winelands rescuing bottles in distress. But I’m no Superman. I’m just plain Rick; a Cape crusader perhaps\, but one where cloaks are exchanged for a rather tatty Harris Tweed jacket and any superhuman powers are substituted by a supposedly blessed palate. \nOn his regular jaunts around the Cape\, he is often confounded by the number of great wines that are resigned to a tragic fate of being blended away or disposed of in bulk. It might be an occasional experimental batch\, or possibly an interesting off-cut from some proud winemaker’s latest premium release. Whatever their provenance\, it’s his mission as The Liberator to procure these precious vinous orphans and consign them to a better home. \nInevitably\, each wine discovered by The Liberator comes with its own story; a tale of its untimely existence. You’ll find that every release has its testimony recounted\, in bottle and on screen\, as a unique and evocative Episode. Each Episode is a one off and production is limited.

DESCRIPTION:As we come towards winter and the dark nights draw in my drinking thoughts turn towards the delights of Port. This is a little unfair though because Port is fabulous at any time of year and there is so much diversity that there is a Port for everyone and every occasion.  \nI’ve been to Porto twice in the last year and it’s a fabulous place where Port wines are the very beating heart of all that goes on. So from dry white Port through to bold Vintage Port via epic Tawny ports it’s a whole lot of flavour and we’re going to cram it all in to one amazing evening.
